History: Duran is the illegitimate half-brother to Rufus ShinRa, born within an hour or so of each other, the two might have been twins if not for their separate mothers. Growing up Duran never knew he even had a father---certainly never suspected the Shinra Company President. As children; Rufus was Duran's very best and only friend.
The boys were nearly inseparable and fond of mischief, often sneaking out past their bedtimes to play and sleep with wild beasties, such as the likes of Rufus' now pet DarkNation. Duran's blood & fire red hair became dusted by white/silver/gray from very early on in his life as a result of intense 'episodes' in which precognition would strike. By the time he could remember he had already become as accustomed to these random occurrences as one might be to breathing.
Due to this foresight, even when they were still so young, he was able to spare Rufus' from the misfortune of accidental death more than once. Duran was always fond of heights, pushing limits and feeding the mind, nurturing Rufus' latent imagination. He affectionately nicknamed the ShinRa heir such things as Dufus and Led Feet.
The death of Rufus' mother, the disappearance of Duran's also, and then the abduction of Duran himself... All these events were connected - buried in an elaborate scheme to erase President ShinRa's unfortunate..mistake. By around age five Duran had been taken away and subjected to experimental practices. In exchange for ShinRa's silence, Duran became traded away to an illegal research facility as nothing more than a nameless specimen, of so little consequence it wouldn't matter if he lived or died. As long as it kept the facility off the radar---no one thought to ask why it could be so vital to the ShinRa company that a mere child disappear to certainly possible death.
Strands of his hair had started growing out blackened presumably because of the projects he was exposed to. After a hostile take-over from other underground crime syndicates seeking to weaponize the facility's research projects, when something about Duran's blood/genetic-makeup/etc. fell defunct and unresponsive to manipulation, ShinRa long lost secret was scheduled for expulsion... until a destitute employee took "pity" on the boy and decided to take him in for . . other uses.
He wound up on the black-market as a human slave, commonly bought for sexual purposes, trading hands as often as one 'owner' decided to share/trade/gift him like a bargaining chip or just plain bored of him and so on.... Eventually he found his way into the hands of his most preferred Master. His " Master 'Beloved' " who took notice of his uncanny ability for predicting things and used him less like a toy and more like a prized pet, or perhaps - a guard creature even, daring to bestow more value on him then mere disposability.
One day a rival stole him from this Master. But negligence allowed him to secretly acquire two blades, planning to kill the enemy fool, because the favored Master had allowed the youth to hone his more suppressed talents for the purpose of both offense and defense. However, the authorities were onto this wannabe's trail, so the fool ran and left Duran behind.
This landed the bastard ShinRa in the hands of Social Services or whatever, to be re-educated in relative seclusion, until they felt he was ready for insertion back into 'the real world' and shipped him off to Dusk Academy. There he would crossed paths with Rufus ShinRa for the first time in approximately thirteen years or so and in a short while he finally learned that he was in fact Rufus' actual half-brother. Duran still remembers his mother only as "the red-haired lady" albeit with tender adoration - Rufus was able to provide him with her last name: Esprii.
He's recently taken on a woodworking job at a quaint shop in Dusk Village. Preferring to keep minimal money in his pockets, despite the quality of his work - never mind the slightly unorthodox methods, though he could probably get more than enough money from Rufus Shinra anytime due to their close ties. His lifestyle is suspended between low-profile and on-the-edge.
He has a slightly empathic ability; particular when he and someone else nearby are experiencing a similar emotion at the same time.
Pets: Omae-chama; a pale-colored fluffy "kittie" given to him by Rufus ShinRa during their Academy days. It is actually part displacer beast, sporting tentacles, which it rests flat along its body and effectively disguises in its long fur. Being a few years old now it's getting pretty good sized; standing somewhere betwixt a large Maine Coon and a wild-cat's cub /or/ a small wildcat.
